Children spend as much time at school as they do in any other environment. The food they eat at school provides the fuel for the body and the brain to perform.
Meals that offer good nutrition can positively affect academic, social, and physical development. No argument there, right? Just go ahead and start filling those lunchboxes with healthy options and you’re good to go, right?
(Pardon me while I die laughing.)
Those who live in the real world may have noticed it’s “sometimes” a “difficult negotiation process” to pack those lunchboxes with health foods. And it’s “a little” frustrating (not to mention wasteful) when the boxes come back partially eaten (or entirely uneaten).
But that doesn’t mean you should stock lunchkits with Snack Packs and soda!
I know many, many parents who have tried all sorts of tricks and tactics to ensure good choices are packed into those boxes. I’ve gathered up some of my favourites below — hopefully these ten tips will provide some new inspiration.
Worried about buy-in for the healthy lunchables? Include your children in the grocery shopping and have them help in selecting sugar-free or low sugar options. Have them be label reading detectives. If they feel some ownership in the process they may be more accountable when it comes to packing that lunchbox.
